First Turkish Ship Breaker Receives Hong Kong Convention Compliance

A ship recycling facility in Izmir, Turkey has become the first yard in the country   to receive a Statement of Compliance verifying that its shipbreaking facilities   and practices are in line with the requirements of the Hong Kong Convention on   ship recycling.

The SoC was issued by international classification society ClassNK   to ISIKSAN Ship Recycling, marking the first time SoC have been issued to   ship  recycling facilities in Turkey.

Although the Hong Kong Convention has not yet entered into force, the SoC shows that the Isiksan yard is in full compliance with the requirements set forth in the international convention, and confirms that its ship recycling processes follow the Ship Recycling Facility Plan (SRFP) required for a competent authority’s certification.

“ClassNK is glad to issue the HKC Statement of Compliance and make its first step in Turkish ship recycling facilities. We will keep and further strengthen involvement to encourage safe and environmentally sound ship recycling practice through our verifications.” says ClassNK’s Junichi Hirata, Project Manager of Ship Recycling Team.
